Canada Extends the Use of Permitted Sweetener Acesulfame Potassium to Soup bases and Various Sauces

On June 20th, 2022, Health Canada’s Food Directorate published the “Notice of Modification to the List of Permitted Sweeteners to Extend the Use of Acesulfame Potassium to Soup Bases and Various Sauces”, amending the list of permitted sweeteners.

 

The document summarizes the following:

  • Approves the use of sweeteners in Barbeque sauces, Chili sauces, Soup bases, and Soybean sauces;
  • Maximum use levels have been set at 500 p.p.m;
  • Information related to technical, chemistry, and toxicology supports the requested use of the additive for its intended purpose;
  • Manufacturers must declare the ingredient list and nutrition information in the packaging materials containing Acesulfame potassium.

The regulation is effective from June 20th, 2022.
