FSANZ Issues Use of Enzymes Maltogenic alpha-amylase from a GM Strain of E. coli

On November 30^th, 2021, Food Safety Australia and New Zealand sought approval on “Calls for submission on a new processing aid from a GM source”. The use of the enzyme maltogenic alpha-amylase from a GM strain of Escherichia coli.

The scope of the document highlights the following:

• The enzyme will be permitted for use as a processing aid in baking, brewing, and starch processing;
• The assessment found no health or safety concerns for consumers at the proposed usage levels;
• In these food processing applications, the maltogenic alpha-amylase has a technological function during food processing and not in the final food;

• The production organism has a history of safe use for food-grade enzyme production and is not known to produce any toxic metabolites.

The draft is open for public consultation period until January 18^th, 2022.
