On April 24, 2025, the Centre for Food Safety (CFS) announced proposed amendments to “Regulate Konjac-Containing Jelly Confectionery” per Food and Drugs (Composition and Labelling) Regulations, Cap. 132W).
The key points are as follows:
- Sale of mini-cup konjac-containing jelly confectionery (height or width ≤ 45mm) will be banned;
- All prepackaged konjac-containing jelly confectionery must carry a bilingual choking hazard warning as specified in the regulation;
- Ban on mini-cup konjac jellies will take effect six months after the amended Regulations are passed;
- The labeling requirements will come into operation 12 months after the passage of the amended regulations;
- CFS together with the Education Bureau, has advised schools to stop selling mini-cup konjac jellies in tuck shops, and canteens;
The public and stakeholders are invited to submit their views on the proposed amendments on or before June 8, 2025
