What an independent analyst evaluation of 17 formulation technology providers says about where this market is going — and what buyers should take from it.
ARC Advisory Group positioned Trace One as a Major Player in its 2026 MarketMap for Formulation Technologies, an independent evaluation of 17 providers including Dassault Systèmes, Infor, Oracle, SAP, Siemens and Veeva Systems. ARC gave five specific reasons: domain alignment with food scientists and chemists rather than generic PLM workflows, regulatory intelligence spanning more than 170 countries, supplier and ingredient collaboration across complex networks, a focused strategic vision around formulation intelligence and sustainability, and production-grade AI already in use. ARC also set out where it expects Trace One to go next.
Most evaluations fail on scope, not on scoring. Adjacent systems — MES, LIMS, automation, generic ERP — answer a formulation brief convincingly in a demonstration and reveal the gap during implementation. Establish the category boundary before you build the shortlist.
In 2026, ARC Advisory Group did something the formulation market had been missing: it defined the category. ARC describes formulation as moving from a largely local, experimental activity to a governed, lifecycle-oriented discipline, and notes that the market had been fragmented and often misunderstood.
ARC Advisory Group is an independent research and advisory firm founded in 1986, covering technology for industrial, energy and infrastructure markets. Its analysts assess software and automation vendors across manufacturing sectors, and its research is used by manufacturers and technology buyers worldwide.
The MarketMap is the vendor landscape that followed. ARC evaluated 17 providers — including Dassault Systèmes, Infor, Oracle, SAP, Siemens and Veeva Systems — through live capability demonstrations, detailed supplier questionnaires and independent research, scoring each across solution capabilities and strategic vision.
ARC positioned Trace One as a Major Player, and summarized its assessment this way:
“Trace One stands out as one of the most comprehensive formulation platforms for food and CPG industries, combining deep scientific data modeling, regulatory automation, supplier collaboration, and sustainability intelligence. Its strength lies in treating formulation as a scientific and regulatory discipline rather than a generic PLM process.”
That last sentence is the argument. Everything below is what sits underneath it.
ARC identified domain alignment as Trace One's primary differentiator — the platform is built around how food scientists and chemists actually work, rather than adapting generic product lifecycle management to a formulation problem.
ARC's first differentiator is blunt:
“Trace One differentiates itself through deep domain alignment with food scientists and chemists rather than generic PLM workflows.” |
This matters more than it sounds. Product lifecycle management was built for discrete manufacturing — for products that are assembled from parts. A formulated product is not assembled. It is composed, and every component interacts with every other one.
A generic PLM system can hold a recipe. It cannot tell you that substituting one emulsifier changes an allergen declaration in nine markets and breaches a cost threshold in three of them. That gap is why ARC treats formulation management software as a category of its own, explicitly separate from MES, laboratory information systems, automation and generic ERP.
ARC cited automated regulatory intelligence covering more than 170 countries, over 400 vertical and horizontal guidelines and more than two million restrictions — and described regulatory compliance as a core operational strength rather than an afterthought.
Most platforms treat compliance as a check performed after formulation. ARC's assessment is that Trace One treats it as part of formulation.
The scale ARC cited is what makes that possible: more than 170 countries, over 400 vertical and horizontal guidelines and more than two million restrictions, with automated safety data sheet and labeling generation on top.
The practical test is what happens on the day a rule changes. When the ECHA Candidate List is updated, or FDA labeling requirements shift, the question is not what is in one product. It is which of several hundred products contain the substance, in which markets, and which labels now need amending. Trace One's global food legislation database and regulatory compliance capabilities are built to answer that in a query rather than a project.
Brown-Forman, the fifth-largest global spirits company, uses exactly this to manage formulation complexity across more than 170 markets — where a single ingredient such as sugar is regulated differently in each one.
ARC recognized Trace One's supplier and ingredient collaboration portals, enabling specification, certificate of analysis and lifecycle data exchange across complex supplier networks — rather than storing supplier documents as files.
Formulation does not stop at the boundary of the organization. Raw material specifications, certificates of analysis and compliance declarations all originate with suppliers, and most of that data still arrives as email attachments that someone retypes.
ARC identified Trace One's supplier quality management as a differentiator specifically because the exchange is structured. Supplier data enters the formulation workflow as data, not as a document to be filed.
Borghi SpA, a chemicals importer and distributor operating across Europe, Latin America and Asia, uses Trace One SDS Authoring for regulatory compliance, including safety data sheet translation across European languages.
ARC described Trace One's strategic vision as clear and focused, centered on formulation intelligence, digital thread continuity and sustainability-driven product design — with sustainability embedded in formulation workflows rather than treated as an external reporting layer.
Half of ARC's scoring is about direction, not current capability. ARC assessed Trace One's vision as focused on three things: formulation intelligence, digital thread continuity, and sustainability-driven product design.
On sustainability specifically, ARC's June 2026 assessment observed that eco-design capabilities are increasingly embedded directly into formulation workflows rather than treated as an external reporting layer. ARC's view is that this points toward structural packaging capabilities supporting lifecycle environmental assessment and the coming European Digital Product Passport requirements.
The distinction is meaningful. A carbon figure calculated after a formula is locked is a report. A carbon figure visible while the chemist is still choosing between two raw materials is a design constraint.
ARC described Trace One as building on an established foundation of production-grade AI capabilities — a regulatory assistant, AI-powered data extraction and AI-generated article summaries — as distinct from announced or roadmap AI.
ARC drew a line most vendor marketing does not: between AI that exists and AI that is announced.
In its June 2026 assessment, ARC described Trace One as building on an established foundation of production-grade AI capabilities, naming a Copilot regulatory assistant, an AI data extractor, and AI-generated article summaries. ARC expects capabilities in this category to move toward more advanced agentic and generative applications.
In practice, Trace One Copilot answers regulatory questions against proprietary regulatory intelligence, and AI-powered document extraction structures incoming supplier documentation automatically, reducing manual data entry and improving product data quality.
For buyers evaluating this market, the useful question is not whether a vendor has an AI story. It is which capabilities are running in customer environments today.
