On April 28, 2025, the Australian Government, Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, updated the “Import Conditions for Fresh Cherries from the United States”, specifically on the phytosanitary certification, packaging, and labelling requirements.

The key points are as follows:

  • Phytosanitary certificates must now declare the cherries’ origin from approved US counties and confirm compliance with the operational work plan;
  • Fumigation treatment details, including lot codes, dates, facility identifiers, and treatment IDs, must be included on certificates;
  • Packaging must meet secure consignment standards such as sealed cartons, polythene liners, or mesh-covered vents;
  • Labels must clearly show product origin, fruit type, packing/treatment facility codes, and treatment ID;
  • These changes apply to importers, brokers, and department staff managing cherry imports from the US.

The import requirements are effective from April 28, 2025.
