EU Adopts New Amendments To Additives Legislation

On May 4 and 7, the EU parliament adopted two Regulations that amend Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 of the European Parliament and of the Council of December 16 2008 on food additives.

The first of the amendments, Commission Regulation (EU) 2018/677 of 3 May 2018 was published on May 4 and regulates the use of thaumatin (E 957) as a flavor enhancer in certain food categories. Thaumatin is now allowed for use in the food category ’sauces’ with a limit of 5 mg/kg and in the food category ’Potato-, cereal-, flour- or starch-based snacks’ the limit is set to 5 mg/kg.

The second amendment, Commission Regulation (EU) 2018/682 of May 4, 2018, changed the notes for polyglycerol polyricinoleate (E 476) as an emulsifier to specify that it can be used in emulsified sauces only.

Both amendments shall enter into force by the end of May 2018.
