EU Authorises the Use of Vitamin D2 Mushroom Powder as Novel Food with Usage Restrictions

On April 9, 2025, the European Union (EU) authorized the “Use of Vitamin D2 mushroom powder derived as a novel food” per Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/691 amending Implementing Regulation (EU) 2017/2470.

The document summarizes the following:

  • Vitamin D2 mushroom powder is authorised as a novel food under Regulation (EU) 2015/2283;
  • Approved for use in specific foods and supplements, excluding those for infants and young children, such products must carry a warning label; 
  • Only Luxidum GmbH (the applicant) is authorised to market this novel food in the EU for 5 years from 30 April 2025;
  • The data submitted by the applicant, including production and stability studies, was found essential and valid to support the authorisation;
  • Regulation (EU) 2017/2470 is amended to include this product, with set vitamin D2 limits and safety specifications for each food category.
