EU Modifies Existing Maximum Residue Limits for Fosetyl/phosphonic acid resulting from the use of Potassium phosphonates

On January 03rd, 2022, the European Food Safety Authority published the regulation on “Modify the existing maximum residue levels (MRLs) for fosetyl/phosphonic acid (fosetyl-Al (sum of fosetyl, phosphonic acid, and their salts, expressed as fosetyl)) in chards/beet leaves and honey” in accordance with Article 6 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005.

The scope of the document highlights the following:

  • The available data is found to be sufficient to draw the MRLs proposed for the commodities such as chards/beet leaves and honey;
  • Adequate analytical methods are available to control the residues of fosetyl and phosphonic acid;
  • The intended uses of potassium phosphonates on chards/beet leaves are proposed at 60 mg/kg or to 40 mg/kg and honey from 0.5 to 150 mg/kg or to 100 mg/kg;
  • Short-term and long-term intake of phosphonic acid residues in the given commodities from the use of potassium phosphonates is safe for use.
