Importance of Restrictions

Restrictions are a tool to protect human health and the environment from unacceptable risks posed by some chemicals. Restrictions, described in Annex XVII of Regulation 1907/2006 (REACH), may limit or ban the manufacture, placing on the market or use of a substance. Restrictions to which substances are potentially subjected have to be reported in Section 15 of the SDS.

Last February 29th 2024, the EU Member States have voted in favour of a Restriction proposal regarding Perfluorohexanoic acid (“PFHxA”), its salts and PFHxA-related substances.

Draft text

According to the provisional text, the Restriction would ban the placing on the market or use of the Perfluorohexanoic acid, its salts and PFHxA-related substances in a concentration equal to or greater than 25 ppb for the sum of PFHxA and its salts, or 1000 ppb for the sum of PFHxA-related substances, measured in homogeneous material in various types of product, such as textile, footwear for the general public, paper and generally in mixtures for the general public.

The draft also reports some exemption, such as for textile used as construction textiles.
