sugarOn December 07th, 2023, the Board of Food Standards Australia New Zealand issued a notification on “Food Standards Variation on Added Sugars for Claims” per section 92 of the Food Standards Australia New Zealand Act 1991.

The document highlights the following key points:

  • The Schedule varies a Standard in the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code;
  • Section 1.1.1-9 of Standard 1.1.1 does not apply to the variations made by this instrument;
  • Schedule 4 on Nutrition, health, and related claims of S4-3, indicates the use of Sugar or Sugars of any sources as prescribed in the regulation;
  • The ingredient in standard refers to the compound ingredient;
  • The standard on Unsweetened, low, reduced/lite, no added, % free sugars have been indicated;
  • Food products labeled and sold shall comply with the requirements of the Transition and Post Transition periods.
