FSANZ Proposes New Food Safety Management Standards

Trace One_EU-scientific-opinion-e-900On February 14th, 2022, the Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) proposed the “New Food Safety Management Standards” for foodservice and retail businesses to strengthen food safety practices and reduce the rate of foodborne illnesses.

 

The scope of the document summarizes the following:

  • Proposal to amend the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code (the Code) to introduce nationally-consistent food safety management regulations;
  • To help food businesses enhance their food safety management practices and deliver safe food to consumers;
  • To introduce three specific food safety measures such as a food safety supervisor on staff, training food handlers, and ensuring the businesses provide evidence to substantiate food safety management;
  • A risk-proportionate regulation is proposed, with targeted measures to apply to businesses based on their level of food safety risk.

The draft is open for public comments until April 11th, 2022.
