India Implements Food Safety and Standards on Health Supplements, Nutraceuticals, Food for Special Dietary and Medical Purposes and Novel Foods

On May 10, 2019, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India published the “Implementation of Food Safety and Standards (Health Supplements, Nutraceuticals, Food for Special Dietary Uses, Food for Special Medical Purposes, Functional Foods and Novel Food) Regulations, 2016.“ to convey information and necessary actions regarding the following:
- Until June 30, 2019, the Food Business Operators (FBOs) are allowed to market formulations containing ’Mere combinations of vitamins and minerals only up to one RDA in dosage formats such as tablets, capsules and syrups’;
- Ingredients that are not allowed under Nutraceutical regulations cannot be used in any food product, unless permission under Food Safety and Standards Regulations.
