On October 5, 2020, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) developed a technical guidance document on the Scientific Guidance for the Preparation of Applications on Smoke Flavouring Primary Products. This comes after the assessment of existing regulations and new approach on the current developments.

The document aims to guide through the preparation of applications of smoke flavoring primary products.

Applications have to include the following:

  • Description of the source materials, manufacturing process, chemical composition, specifications and stability, intake levels and the assessment of the dietary exposure.
  • Monitoring safety data and information on the genotoxic potential of the identified components.
  • Assessment of smoke flavours using Margin of Safety (MOS) calculator for consumers and perform a toxicological data assessment to show evidence on the Non-Genotoxic smoke flavours.
Technical guidance document is available on the EFSA website and in FNMS.

The public consultation period ends on November 16, 2020.
