Philippines Issues a National Standard on Virgin Coconut Oil for Human Consumption

philippines-issues-a-national-standard-on-virgin-coconut-oil-for-human-consumptionOn June 04th, 2022, the Food and Drug Administration of the Philippines published the “Draft Philippine National Standard (PNS) by the Center for Food Regulation and Research (CFRR)” based on the scientific opinions of the Philippines Coconut Authority.


The standard highlights the following key points:

  • Applies to Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) intended for human consumption including its use as Food Supplement;
  • The centrifugation method used to separate oil from coconut milk in the VCO production;
  • The standard supersedes PNS/BAFPS 22:2007 ICS67.200.10 Virgin Coconut Oil;
  • Essential identities and quality characteristics such as Physico-chemical, metal contaminants, and sensory evaluation are well defined;
  • Packaging and labeling requirements are clearly indicated.


The document is open for comments until June 13th, 2022.
