The Chinese standards
The GB 30000.2-29-2013 is the GHS UN implementation in China and it is composed of a series of 28 compulsory standards which sets the classification and labelling criteria for substances and mixtures. Each standard describes the criteria for one hazard class under GHS.
Following the publication of the drafts of the upcoming updates to the Chinese standards back in August 28th 2023, on July 24th 2024 China published the GB 30000.1-2024 “Specification for classification and labelling of chemicals - Part 1:General rules” standard, bringing it in line with the 8th revision of the GHS UN standard.
The GB30000.1 - 2024: what’s new?
While most of the changes are structural (such as the deletion of Appendix A “Examples of precautionary statements”, Appendix B “Pictograms of Protective Measures, Appendix C “GHS label examples” and Appendix D “Minimum information for Safety Data Sheet” and updates to some definitions and abbreviations), the most relevant change is the addition of the Desensitized Explosives physical hazard classification.
The GB30000.1 - 2024: when?
This standard will come into effect on August 1, 2025 and is set to replace the “General Rules for Classification and Hazard Communication of Chemicals (GB 13690-2009)” standard, which was previously aligned to the 4th GHS UN revision.
